LogiPik evaluated this photograph as 'erotic'

LogiPik, a PHP image filter for websites which supposedly uses a number of advanced detection layers to accurately classify a pictures level of appropriateness, thinks this picture of Stephen Conroy is porn. Actually, of the five photographs of Conroy I tried, three were considered porn and the one to the right ‘erotic’. Cheers to Eddie and the guys at Whirlpool for testing it out.

To the media and you may have missed these fine articles on filtering:

- When the f-word is ‘filter’ by Glenn Milne (Courier Mail)
- PG Nation by Matthew Thompson (ABC Unleashed)
- Conroy’s Web by Raena Lea-Shannon (New Matilda)

And in response to Clive Hamilton’s article in Crikey (members only)
- Clive Hamilton doesn’t quite win “Cnut of the Week” by Stilgherrian
- Internet censorship. Nice idea, just not practical (members only) by Colin Jacobs (who definitely doesn’t think it’s a nice idea)

Event wise, limited seats are still available at UNSW’s filtering forum this Thursday. The speaker list has now been confirmed.

Something a little different: Have you spoken to your loved one about filtering? Kieran has - with mixed results.

And who would have guessed Obama would speak about our filtering plans.

I’ll leave you with this though. After a rough week of storms in Brisbane, EFA’s ‘Protect the country’s children from bad weather’ parody from 1999 couldn’t be any more relevant. We need mandatory shields installed in all exposed public areas to prevent bad weather reaching children, and we need them now!

  2. Thanks for this mate. I was out of town and in the wilderness this week. I see that we have a lone public intellectual speaking up for the affirmative side in Hamilton.

  3. I tried the evaluation filter on an image of yourself (possibly from a social website somewhere). I’m afraid your face is regarded by the evaluation demo as erotic as well…

… I guess it means “attractive to women” ?

Both you and Senator Conroy are attractive to women ! Is that a problem ?

I have a MySpace image (not that I use MySpace but I am registered). The results declare that my Spacebook image is “clean”..

I opened a myspace account due to the fact my brother (the live one) has a music based myspace page at….

    I haven’t tested Ken’s image yet.

  4. Yeah I don’t think it’s very accurate. After all, how does a filter decide if an image is ‘erotic’.

  5. With respect to the forum on Thursday I did email and ask to be registered and it appears that anyone who requested an invite has been approved so (despite the fact the campus is a long way from here) I’ll probably attend.

This is a reminder that the Australian Computer Society have established a “task force” which meets the day before the forum at the University of New South Wales.

    ACS establishes E-security Task Force

Tuesday, 18 November 2008 - The Australian Computer Society (ACS), Australia’s peak professional body for the ICT sector, today announced it has formed a new E-security Task Force, comprising Australia’s leading experts in e-security and ISP filtering.

ACS Chairman, Kumar Parakala said the ACS has established the Task Force to take a leadership role, provide expert technical advice, and review e-security and ISP filtering proposals for the ACS to develop policy positions. These issues are of critical importance to the safety and security of Australian ICT infrastructure, on-line business models and internet users.

The ACS Task Force will meet for the first time on 26 November to discuss ISP filtering and e-security issues, following the Government’s recent announcement of the pilot trial of ISP level filtering.

    ———-

“We are living in a networked era, where uninterrupted access to the web and private and corporate email is part of everyday life. With current filtering and e-security measures potentially reducing Internet access and accessibility speeds, it’s essential that Australia has a national e-security framework that reflects contemporary communication modes and contemporary work environments. The ACS E-Security Task Force will play an important role in developing policy and technical advice for the ACS. The ACS will be looking to ensure that businesses and consumers are protected from online risks while fully harnessing the opportunities of an emerging digital economy,” said Mr Parakala.

I also note a connection between some members of the ACS (Australian Computer Society) and the legal team at the University of New South Wales but am not aware of any direct involvment in the task force by any facet of the legal team at the University of New South Wales.

  6. Thanks for the link, that’s quite a handy line up of links there.

    The EFA parody was hilarious.

  7. Porn on the internet is such a moving target that any filter that makes it seem too easy… is just hype on hype! Like most, I agree that filtering should be done on the part of the user/parent. The government may better use its resources to educate people on the True Dangers of Internet Porn, and closing down the thousands of porn traps on the web that make it a minefield for children and parents who do not want to be exposed to porn of any kind.

As co-founder of My Internet Doorman , I can tell you it takes a lot of work and human analysis to properly Block Porn for a given client… never mind an entire country!
