GetUp! one step closer to entering filtering fight?

November 4, 2008 – 5:19 pm

People have been asking for some time now whether GetUp! will be entering the ring in the fight against net censorship down under.  Well today we may be that one step closer to knowing. GetUp! has published a story from Colin Jacobs of EFA and that’s a good sign they are interested.

In his article Filtering at Odds with Broadband Revolution Colin writes:

Although very limited filtering has occurred in other democracies, the scope of the Government’s plan is much broader and is only comparable to that attempted by repressive regimes around the world. Before the scheme is in place, pressure is already mounting in Parliament to expand the scope of the mandatory filter to encompass all adult material and other categories such as gambling or anorexia-related sites. It’s hard to see how the Government could resist this pressure when bargaining in the senate to get important legislation passed.

  3. Get Up Owe their Succcess to the Openess of the NET!

If they do not come out with us in support of this campaign, then they are merely confirming Liberal Party allegations that they are nothing but a Labor Party Front!

I for one do not care either way, as I know we are going to Win. Am very curious though to see as to what their stance is and their actual timing of their entrance into the campaign, if they actually do.

    Should be interesting!

  4. I do not believe GetUp! is a Labour party front, the Liberal Party is renowned for their dishonesty and chicanery (remember that leaflet they produced claiming radical Islam supported the Labour Party). I am however disappointed that the don’t have the balls to take a stand on this issue.

  5. I had an email back on Thursday that suggested they would be running a campaign on it and that they were currently “refining our campaign strategy”.
