Nick Minchin has replaced Bruce Billson as shadow minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. News Report.

In 2003 Minchin, Tony Abbott and Alan Cadman (amongst others) formed the ‘Family Policy Group’ to persue the interest of families in parliament. All three are linked to the Lyons Forum who in 1997 attempted to ban X-rated material.

Update 1: The Age writes ‘it is understood Senator Minchin is deeply unhappy about his removal from the shadow defence position.’

Update 3 23/09 9AM: Minchin says his experience as finance minister had given him a strong understanding of the importance of fair competition in the telecommunications sector. ‘My general approach will be to support freedom of choice for consumers and industry. Where regulation is appropriate, it should be light-handed and only put in place where the benefits of regulation exceed the costs.

Update 4 23/09 9:38AM: Minchin: ‘Other issues I will be pursuing with Senator Conroy are Labor’s uncertain plans for a digital switch-off; ABC and SBS funding; cyber safety; and interactive gambling.
